June 2003 Fan Mail

Dear Caroline,
Thank you SOOOO much for your wonderful Roman Mysteries books!
I am a year 3 & 4 teacher currently doing a project on the Romans and have chosen your book, The Thieves of Ostia, as our class book and to study for Literacy hour. I must say, my class cannot get enough of the story... I have long felt that there is a real gap in accessible historical fiction for young readers, and your books admirably fill that gap. The maps, plans, etc. all add authenticity, and have given our topic/literacy work a real boost. Today's lesson was in writing in the first person, so I got the children to write about Nubia as if they themselves were Nubia - some of the work was quite 'tear-jerking' with one child finishing her piece with the words 'at last I began to feel a sense of hope' as Nubia joined Flavia's birthday feast... Thank you again for such wonderful books - do you do books for grown-ups too? Since the death of Mary Renault, there hasn't really been a serious writer about the ancient world worth reading. Maybe you could write a grown-up version of the Roman Mysteries with a bit more spice in them! Thank you again for such entreating and informative books.
Yours sincerely,
Jenny

Dear Caroline,
I met you on Friday at Tenterden Town hall.
I really would like to read your books and I ... hope that your book that you are writing is a success.
From Sophie
Wittersham School

Dear Caroline,
I really enjoyed Dolphins: it is so imaginative (though my Mummy points out it is also historically accurate!).
My best friend, Alastair, also enjoys your books and has already vowed to buy the new one.
Yours sincerely

Dear Caroline
I have already read [Twelve Tasks]. It was brilliant.
I can not wait until the next one comes out.

Dear Caroline,
I would like to congratulate you on your newest book- The Twelve Tasks of Flavia Gemina! It is soooooooooooo good! I need to know when the next book is coming out, so I can go and buy it immediately!
Your biggest fan
Sophie

Your new book is magnificent. Possibly your best work (that I've read). The way you expressed the feelings of Flavia yet never left out the other characters. The way you refer to the Greek myths in such description. I think you could beat J.K. Rowling in a battle of the books because you give so much information, you don't leave the reader in as much suspense yet the antisipation is still strong and you're alot quicker at relesing a new book

I thought [Twelve Tasks] was great... It was completely different that the book was so much about love stories and I am afraid that it might throw some boys off the stories. However, I did like it. I liked the aspect of Flavia having to use the twelve tasks as clues. Also, Caroline, I wanted to tell you that I am really grateful that you are writing so many books and that we only have to wait til the fall for your next one.
Sincerely,
Mark

Yes, 'The Twelve Tasks' has lots of romance, Mark, but don't worry, 'The Enemies of Jupiter' is the antidote!!

Hi Caroline,
I am called Gianluca (aged 8) and I have read all of your books, and I love them! I love them so much that I think that
every one in school should know about your books and should read them.... I am sure everyone would be interested to learn more about Roman History from your books. From the Pirates of Pompeii, I guessed that ******* had killed Lupus' parents and I found out that I was right... If you could give me some hints about what will happen in the next Roman Mysteries book, I would be very interested to hear them.
Yours sincerely
Gianluca

Dear Mrs Lawrence,
My name is Rohan. I am 9 and live at Avoca Beach in Australia. I have read and loved all of the books and am waiting for my autographed copy of The 12 Tasks to arrive from England. Our class at school has been invited to do a newspaper for the local paper. I am sending you the review I have written for it. Please come to Australia. I would love to meet you in person.
All the best from the Aussie Rohan

The review:
The Roman Mysteries is an action packed historical fiction series. At the moment only 5 have been released but more are to come. The Roman Mysteries has 4 main characters named Flavia, Jonathan, Nubia and Lupus. Other characters include Flavia's pater (Father), the rich patron Felix, Flavia's uncle Gaius, the slave dealer Venalicius and many more. Each character comes from a different place in the Roman Empire. Flavia is a Roman girl, Jonathan a Jewish boy, Nubia is a slave from Africa and Lupus is a boy from the Greek island of Symi. It is set in the major Roman port of Ostia but in each book they go somewhere new. The book titles are The Thieves Of Ostia, The Secrets Of Vesuvius, The Pirates of Pompeii, The Assassins Of Rome and The Dolphins Of Laurentum. The series is written by Caroline Lawrence. These books make you imagine that you are there, so you should buy them.

You came to my school today, the london oratory school, junior house section and spoke to me and my class mates.
first of all, i would like to say thank you for the secrets of Vesuvius, i have finished it already. in my opinion, your books are more intriguing and enjoyable than the artemis fowl series, the alex Rider series and the Roal Dahl books.
I really enjoyed the book you gave to me and would like to discuss it with you. Vale!

Dear Caroline Lawrence
I have read 2 of your books and I think they are both wonderful. They are so interesting and have helped me with my Greek project. My favourite character is Nubia because she is very sweet and kind. Who is your favourite? I love the way all the characters are different, Flavia is very clever, Jonathan is strong and sometimes boastful and Lupus is surprising. I like the way Nubia is so good with dogs.

I LOVE YOUR BOOKS! Its a great idea for a series.
I saw The Theives of Ostia when I went to Europe last summer and I have loved them ever since. I would be surprised if your books didn't get any awards. They are the best ever! When I got one of the books I had to make myself not read it because I wanted to read it in the evening when I had to go with my parents to some boring dinner. I finished it that evening! I wish everyone knew about your books! They aren't very well known here. My friends don't even know what I'm talking about! I can't wait to read The Twelve Tasks of Flavia Gemina!
Sincerely,
Mirva

Caroline,
My son is dyslexic, so reading can be challenging for him at times. Your books have helped him to be interested in history and geography, as he has enjoyed the stories and learnt along the way. He is eagerly awaiting your next book.
Regards,

Dear Caroline Lawrence
I am writing partly to ask if you can give me tips for writing stories but mainly to say how good I think your books are.
I have read all of them apart from 'Dolphins of Laurentum' which I am going to read when I have finished 'Out of the Hitler Time'. My favourite character is Lupus because he saves Flavia from the dogs in 'The thieves of Ostia'. I also liked Jonathan's story of looking for his mother in 'The Assassins of Rome'. I think they are really good because I like mystery stories and the descriptions of what it was like living in Roman times. It has made me want to go and visit lots of places you have described like Ostia, Pompeii, Nero's Golden House and Felix's villa. My mum has seen a lot of these places and has shown me her photos of Ostia...

Yours sincerely
Jamie
