Salve Caroline!
your books have inspired me to take latin and classic civilisation for GCSE. I have just finished book 8, the fugitive from corinth and i have not got the next book yet because they are so good!!! i was fiddling around on the piano and ended playing a song that sounded like Nubia's sailing song so i called it the Delphina. i was watching i'd do anything and im glad harry got through. I have a questions. Will you ever write any other books about Flavia Jonathan Nubia and Lupus??? My favourite character is Jonathan because we are quite similar: I am a good archer and i am asthmatic, my favourite book is... all of them!!!
Vale, Ted
Salve Caroline!
I ... was REALLY REALLY excited when I read on your website that you’re coming here [to Northumberland] in June. However, then I realised, it’s on a school day! *Sob*. For my school work experience, I am working at one of the Roman sites on Hadrian’s Wall, at Corbridge. We’re also doing about the Romans in school at the moment [seems silly that in all the 10 years I’ve been at school I’ve never done the Romans, despite the Wall being right on our doorstep!], and I know a lot more than everyone else, probably due to reading all your books! We’re going on a trip to Vindolanda [I think you visit there when you come up] on 12th May, and I think it’ll be great. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out, and I wish I could persuade you to come back here on a weekend, or maybe even pay a visit to Vindolanda a month early!!

I am doing an after school booksigning at Cogito Books on Tuesday from 4.00 - 5.00. See you there?
Hi Caroline,It was a pleasure to meet you last weekend - and to listen to your very informative lecture on writing... My youngest son is a big fan of your books - as are we all - so he was speechless when I presented him with the story you gave me. It went straight off to school on Monday and he came home around a foot taller.
sincerely, Marcus Fulvius Eriticus Lucullus

Just a quick note to say how much my daughters and I enjoyed your talk at Brading Roman Villa. My daughter Saskia has not stopped talking about it and is already halfway through her new book that she bought today. She really has enjoyed reading your books and I think today has inspired her even more.
With kind regards, Claire
Salve Caroline!
I was watching I'd Do Anything and I was overjoyed when Harry was chose to be one of the semi-finalists! I love watching him on the Roman Mysteries and I can't wait for Season Two! Which Nancy do you like the best? I really like Rachel, Niamh and Samantha! They are all cool and I hope Harry will be one of the three Olivers! When you finish writing the Roman Mysteries will you write another series? Will there be any signings of your books in London around 6th July? Your books are fab and I really enjoy reading them! I prefer writing real-life stories, I could never write a mystery or set it in AD79! Please carry on writing fab books!
Vale,
Beverley, your adoring fan!
Salve,
I'm just watching I'd do anything and Harry got through!!!! Say to him from me EXCELLENT JOB!!!!!! I know he'll be an Oliver but he'll still be Lupus and Harry to everyone!!!!!!!
Vale, Connor
Hello Caroline
I have been watching I'd do Anything and Harry is now through to the semi-finals. Yay! I can't wait for the next book. I keep my collection of your books on my shelf so I can read them in bed. I am going to be taking the next book on my holiday in Turkey though I will have to take lots as I am a quick reader.
From Emma
I'm going to Turkey, too, Emma! My next book (left) is going to be set there...
Dear Caroline,
I love your books!
I've got the WHOLE collection, except The Scribes Of Alexandria, which I'm DYING to read!
My favourite character is Nubia, because she is so observant of everything, and understands so much about feelings, of animals, and people. I know this sounds horrible, but I think that you should kill all four friends off, after they've had a bit of a good life, maybe had some children, and got married. I say this because I think they should be remembered as young, not old and crippled. Maybe they should have to sacrifice themselves for their families?
I like it that you've included all their mysterious backgrounds, but I think Flavia needs a mystery in her past as well, about her mother maybe? I also like it a LOT that you've included a bit of romance in the girl's lives, but I think maybe Jonathan and Lupus could have a bit too!
Flavia's father seems like the most unlucky person in the world! His wife and his 2 baby sons die, his fiancé dies, he gets stabbed, he gets nearly killed in a shipwreck, his ship sinks, and it was named after his wife, he gets his furniture taken away... AND his only daughter is constantly disobedient, and is always putting her life at risk!
They are FAB books, and I will be really sad when the series finishes.
I could read them over a million times!
Yours Truly, Lucy :)
Salve, Lucy! You're right. I am very hard on Flavia's father. Should I give him a happy ending?
Salve Caroline!
I absolutely love your books! Your books are what actually got me into liking Roman History! Not kidding! You are my favourite author in the Whole Wide World! Seriously! Here in Australia,the Roman Mysteries have just finished for the second time!! Boo!! Me and my mum watch them together! And in June i'm going to get the new book and the Travel Guide! Then in July i'm going to get the First Series of The Roman Mysteries! Yay!! I can hardly wait!! Also, because i love the Roman Mysteries so much, it is showed at 6:00am in the mornings! But i get up and watch it!! My mum would like to thankyou for publishing your books and getting me into liking Roman History! Because she loves it too! Will you make somemore books after your 18th one? I hope so!! Do you think that you could come to Australia to do some book signings? It would be so cool!! My favourite character is Flavia. Because she is so bossy! Can you tell me what the last book is about?
Vale! from connie
Dear Mrs Lawrence
My name is Athena, I'm nine years old and I love your books! My favourite book is The Fugitive from Corinth because it's really scary when they get trapped in a cave! How did you get the idea of writing about Romans? Why did you choose the name Nubia for a slave girl? The next question is: ARE YOU A BOOKWORM? Finally, can you write a story about a girl called Athena, who is Chinese and likes to pretend she is a goddess?
Yours sincerely, Athena
Salve, Athena. Yes! I am a bookworm. In fact the motto of my next book, The Scribes from Alexandria, is tinea sum: I am a bookworm. To see the answers to your other questions, go to my FAQS page.
Salve Caroline,
I've been watching I'd Do Anything and my sister I think Harry is wonderful - I still think he will always be Lupus...
What is the difference between a detective and an informer? They both seem very similar. I can't wait for the Travel Guide to come out and the next book. Thank you so much for your inspiration I can't get enough of your books you are still my absolute favourite author...
Vale, Laura
P.S. My Classical Civilisation A level is slightly over a month away - its amazing how much information there is to learn, have you got any techniques for helping to absorb all the dates and facts you need?
Good question about the detective v. informer. I guess they were similar, but a detective -- especially one like Flavia -- could sometimes let the criminal off with a stern warning instead of turning him or her in to the Emperor. I use a special mnemonic system for dates and numbers but it takes time to learn and then you have to apply it. Tony Buzan and other memory masters teach lots of good techniques. Essentially you use funny or colourful visual links. For example, I use a number shape system where you use an object shaped like a number.
1 = arrow
2 = swan
3 = baby's bottom (on its side)
4 = sail boat
5 = fish hook
6 = elephant's trunk
7 = cliff
8 = hourglass
9 = flag on a pole
10=cricket bat and ball
I used that system to memorize the first ten Roman Emperors in order:
1 = arrow = Augustus - I imagine an arrow thrumming into a calendar page of August
2 = swan = Tiberius - I imagine a swan swimming on the river Tiber
3 = baby's bottom (on its side) Caligula means 'Baby Boots' so I think of his baby's bottom
4 = sail boat = Claudius - I see stuttering Claudius on a sailboat
5 = fish hook = Nero - I think of Nero torturing Christians with hooks
6 = elephant's trunk = Galba - I think of an elephant going *gulp!*
7 = cliff = Otho - I visualize of a man falling off a cliff going 'Oh tho!' instead of 'Oh no!'
8 = hourglass = Vitellius - I imagine vitamins pouring through an hourglass
9 = flag on a pole = Vespasian - I visualize a 'vest' flying from a flagpole
10=cricket bat and ball = Titus - I think of a cricketer in 'tight' trousers!
salve!
I just returned from italy... We were in rome for 2 days... We then visited pompeii, herculaneum and opolontis after that. My favourite of the three was herculaneum because it was smaller than pompeii and better preserved. Pompeii was great although you can't really look at much and walk at the same time without tripping up... We were followed dogs on both sites all day! It's strange, they all start barking and going mad and suddenly when it hit midday they all collapsed at the same time, rather peculiar, it was as it they were dead!? Opolontis was a surprising small site with an over sized swimming pool? The frescoes that were preserved well enough and the larariums in herculaneum were beautiful. We went to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples too, the artefacts were really helpful. It was great to just see everthing I'd read about and put it into context.
Vale Zahra
Salve!
I had the biggest yet greatest shock today in my latin lesson... my latin teacher just out of the blue quoted Jonathan talking about poetry readings cos we're doing our Pliny's letters and she wanted us to realise what poetry recitals were like. It was so cool!
Pippa
Salve, Caroline
