The
Gladiators from Capua
Recording
session 3 June 2004
On
3 June 2004 I was invited to some
sound studios in Hammersmith, London to hear
actor Michael Praed read 'The Gladiators from Capua' for the audiobook recording.
It was fascinating to see the inside of a recording studio and watch the experts
do their thing. Michael threw himself into the recording, using expansive
gestures and facial expressions... and the occasional oath a nice Roman boy
should not have known! (But actors are allowed to say these things and it
made us all laugh).
It was funny and exciting and moving to watch Michael read. The producers
were great, too. Nic, the one who organises everything; David the talented
technician who can make it so that you never hear the pages being turned and
Kevin (from Zimbabwe) the brilliant director who knew just what I had in mind.
It took Michael about four hours to read half the book. He had to go back
a few days later and record the second half. Then he went off in a taxi to
the West End where he is appearing in a new musical called 'Beautiful and
Damned'.
